Image Stabilization Explained: IBIS, Lens IS and Digital

Stabilization fights your shaky hands so handheld shots come out sharp and video looks steady. But it can't freeze a moving subject or replace a gimbal — here's exactly what it does.

Image stabilization counteracts small camera shake so handheld photos come out sharper and handheld video looks steadier. There are three kinds: IBIS (in-body, where the sensor itself moves), optical or lens IS (elements inside the lens move), and digital or electronic (software crops and shifts the frame). Stabilization is rated in "stops" — roughly how much slower a shutter speed you can hand-hold. Crucially, it steadies your shake; it does not freeze a moving subject, so a running child still blurs unless your shutter is fast. Here's each type, what "stops" really means, and — most importantly — what stabilization can and can't rescue.

What stabilization is actually for

When you hold a camera, your hands make tiny, constant movements. At fast shutter speeds those movements are too brief to matter, but as the shutter slows — in low light, or with a long telephoto lens that magnifies every wobble — that shake smears the whole image. Image stabilizationfights exactly this: it senses the camera's movement and physically or digitally compensates for it, so the image stays still on the sensor even though your hands aren't. That's its entire job — steadying the camera, not the subject.

IBIS: in-body stabilization

IBIS (in-body image stabilization) puts the stabilization in the camera body: the sensor itself is mounted so it can shift and rotate a tiny amount to cancel your movement, correcting on as many as five axes. Its big advantage is that it works with anylens you attach — including old manual lenses with no electronics of their own — because the correction happens at the sensor. IBIS is excellent for handheld stills in low light and for static or slow-moving video, and it's especially valuable on wide and normal lenses. It adds some cost and size to a body, which is why not every camera has it.

OIS: optical (lens) stabilization

OIS(optical image stabilization), also called lens IS, builds the stabilization into the lens: a group of elements inside shifts to counter shake before the light reaches the sensor. Each brand has its own name for it — Canon calls it IS, Nikon VR, Sony OSS, Sigma OS, Tamron VC, Panasonic and Fujifilm O.I.S. Because it's tuned for that specific lens, OIS is particularly effective on long telephoto lenses, where correcting the magnified shake matters most. The catch is that you only get it on lenses that include it.

Many modern systems combine the two: when a stabilized lens is mounted on an IBIS body, the camera can coordinate both — marketed as Sync IS, Dual IS or similar — for more correction than either could manage alone.

Digital (electronic) stabilization

Digitalor electronic image stabilization (EIS) uses software rather than moving parts. The camera records a slightly larger area than the final frame, then shifts and crops within it to smooth out movement between frames. It's common in video modes, action cameras and phones, and it can be surprisingly effective for walking footage. The trade-offs: it crops in, so you lose some of your field of view and a little resolution, and it can introduce odd warping artifacts in tricky scenes. It's a useful extra layer, especially on bodies without IBIS, but it isn't free.

What "stops" of stabilization means

Manufacturers rate stabilization in stops, and it uses the same "stop" language as exposure: each stop is a doubling. Rated at five stops, a stabilization system lets you hand-hold a shutter speed roughly five stops slower than you otherwise could and still get a sharp shot. If the old rule of thumb says you need about 1/60s to hand-hold a 60mm-equivalent lens, five stops of stabilization could — in ideal conditions, with good technique — let you hand-hold down around 1/2s. These figures are measured to a standardized test from CIPA, the industry body, so numbers can be compared across makers. Real-world results are usually a stop or two less generous than the headline, because your technique, breathing and the lens all play a part.

What stabilization does — and does not — fix

This is the part beginners most often misunderstand, so let's be blunt. Stabilization fixes camera shake — your own small movements. It does let you shoot sharp handheld shots at slower shutter speeds in low light, and it smooths out the small jitters in handheld and static video.

It does not freeze a moving subject. If your subject is moving — a running dog, a dancing child, a passing car — stabilization does nothing to stop theirmotion blur; only a fast shutter speed can do that. You could have ten stops of stabilization and a sprinting kid will still be a smear at 1/30s, because the camera is rock-steady but the subject isn't. When you still need a gimbal or a tripod

Two tools do jobs stabilization can't. A gimbal— a motorized handle that actively keeps the camera level and floating as you walk — is what you need for smooth moving video, like a walk-and-talk or a tracking shot. Stabilization extends how far you can go handheld; it doesn't abolish the tripod.

IS or a gimbal — which do you actually need?

These get confused constantly, so here's the clean split. In-body or lens stabilization is for handheld stills in low light and for keeping mostly static video steady — a talking-head shot, a locked-off interview, panning slowly. A gimbal is for moving video, where you walk or track with the camera and want that floating, cinematic glide. If your shooting is seated or standing still, prioritize a body with good IBIS and skip the gimbal. If you move while you film, no amount of IBIS replaces a gimbal — buy both jobs the right tool. What stabilization can't rescue

Before you pay extra for more stops, remember the two things stabilization simply cannot do. It can't freeze a moving subject— that's the shutter speed's job, so if you shoot kids, pets or sport, a fast shutter matters far more than a high stabilization rating. And it can't replace a tripodfor long exposures or the sharpest possible landscape, where any handholding, stabilized or not, still loses to a steady set of legs. Stabilization is a genuine, useful feature that buys you sharper low-light handheld shots and smoother casual video — just don't expect it to do jobs that belong to the shutter speed or the tripod. Does image stabilization stop motion blur?
Only the motion blur caused by your own shaky hands — not blur from a moving subject. Stabilization keeps the camera steady, so it lets you shoot sharp handheld shots at slower shutter speeds, but a running child or a passing car will still blur unless you raise the shutter speed. To freeze a moving subject you need a fast shutter, which is a separate control from stabilization.
Do I still need a gimbal if my camera has IBIS?
For moving video, yes. IBIS smooths the small jitters of handheld and static shots, but it can't produce the floating, gliding look of walking footage the way a gimbal's motors can.
