Autofocus Modes Explained
Two settings decide whether your photographs come out sharp, and most cameras ship with the wrong one for what you are doing. Here is how to fix it.

There are two settings that matter. The focus mode decides whether the camera locks focus once or keeps adjusting: use AF-S for anything still, AF-C for anything that moves. The focus area decides where in the frame it looks: use a single point when you know exactly what should be sharp, and a wide or tracking area when the subject moves around the frame. Get those two right and most soft photographs stop happening.
Focus modes: AF-S, AF-C and AF-A
AF-S — single, or one-shot
Half-press the shutter, the camera focuses once, and it holds that focus until you let go. Canon calls it One-Shot AF; Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm call it AF-S. This is the mode for anything that is not moving: landscapes, still life, architecture, a posed portrait, a product on a table. Its great advantage is that it lets you focus and then recompose — lock focus on your subject, then move the camera slightly to frame the shot better, and the focus stays where you put it.
AF-C — continuous, or servo
Hold the shutter half-pressed and the camera keeps adjusting focus as the subject moves. Canon calls it AI Servo or Servo AF; everyone else calls it AF-C. Use it for children, pets, sport, anyone walking toward you, and for essentially all video. The trade-off is that you cannot focus-and-recompose in AF-C — the moment you move the camera, it refocuses on whatever is now under the focus point.
AF-A — automatic, and why we do not recommend it
Some cameras offer an automatic mode that tries to detect whether the subject is moving and switch for you. It works most of the time, and the times it guesses wrong are exactly the moments you most wanted the shot. Deciding for yourself takes one button press and is more reliable. Focus areas: where the camera looks
The focus area setting controls which part of the frame the camera pays attention to. The names differ by brand but the concepts are universal.

The common beginner mistake is leaving the camera on wide or automatic area and wondering why it focused on the background. Wide area lets the camera choose, and cameras conventionally choose whatever is closest and highest-contrast — often a shoulder, a hand, or a branch in front of your subject. Moving to a single point, placed deliberately, fixes more soft photographs than any other single change.
Eye and subject detection
Modern mirrorless cameras add a layer on top of the area setting: subject detection that recognizes faces, human eyes, and increasingly animals, birds and vehicles. When it works — and on current bodies it works remarkably well — it removes the hardest part of portrait photography, which is putting the plane of focus exactly on an eye at a wide aperture where the margin is a centimeter or two.
Turn it on and leave it on for people and animals. Two practical notes. It needs to find the eye, so it struggles when the subject is small in frame, wearing sunglasses, or turned away — in those cases it falls back to the face or the body. And it can grab the wrong person in a group; most cameras let you cycle between detected faces with a control dial or a tap on the screen. Back-button focus: the one habit worth building
By default the shutter button does two jobs — half-press focuses, full press takes the photograph. Back-button focus separates them: you reassign focusing to a button on the back of the camera (usually AF-ON), so the shutter only takes pictures.
Why bother? Because it gives you both focus modes at once. Leave the camera in AF-C. Hold the back button and it tracks continuously, like AF-C. Release the button and focus locks exactly where it was, like AF-S, so you can recompose freely. No more switching modes as a subject starts and stops moving. It feels awkward for about a week and then feels like the camera was always meant to work this way. Nearly every camera supports it somewhere in the custom-controls menu.
Why your photographs are soft — a diagnosis
Not every soft photograph is an autofocus problem, and it saves a lot of frustration to tell them apart before you change settings.
- The wrong thing is sharp. That is a focus-area problem. Switch to a single point and place it deliberately, or turn on eye detection.
- Nothing is sharp and the whole frame is smeared in the same direction. That is camera shake — your shutter speed is too slow. Raise it, or lean on stabilization; our stabilization guide explains what that can and cannot fix.
- The subject is smeared but the background is sharp. That is subject motion, not focus. You need a faster shutter speed — see the exposure triangle.
- The eye is sharp and the ear is not, and that bothers you. That is depth of field working as intended at a wide aperture. Stop down to f/2.8 or f/4 for more margin.
Autofocus for video
Video is always continuous focus, and the priorities change. What matters is not speed but smoothness — a camera that snaps between subjects looks amateurish, so most bodies offer autofocus transition-speed and subject-sensitivity settings. Turn both down for interviews and talking-head work, so the camera drifts gently rather than jumping when someone passes behind you. A setup that works for most people
If you want a starting point rather than a theory, set the camera up like this and adjust from there.
- Focus mode: AF-C. With back-button focus configured, this covers both still and moving subjects without menu diving.
- Focus area: a small zone or expanded point, not full wide. Enough forgiveness for a subject that shifts, enough precision that the camera does not grab the background.
- Subject detection: on, set to human (switch to animal for pets and wildlife). Let the camera find the eye — it is genuinely better at it than you are.
- Back-button focus: enabled. One evening of adjustment for a permanent improvement.
When to override it
Switch to a single point for anything precise — a macro shot, focusing through foliage or a fence, or when detection keeps choosing the wrong person in a group. Switch to AF-S when you want to focus and recompose without back-button focus set up. And turn detection off if you are photographing something the camera keeps mistaking for a face, which happens more often than you would expect.
Does an expensive camera focus better?
Meaningfully, yes — autofocus is the area where camera generations have improved fastest, and it is the main practical difference between a current body and one from five years ago. But the gap between a well-configured cheap camera and a badly configured expensive one is larger than the gap between the two cameras. Learn the settings first.
