The Exposure Triangle Explained: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

Three controls set every photo's brightness — and each one leaves its own fingerprint on the look. Learn how they trade off and you control the camera instead of the other way round.

Every photo's brightness is set by three controls working together — aperture, shutter speed and ISO — and the "exposure triangle" is the name for how they balance. Aperture is how wide the lens opens, shutter speed is how long the sensor is exposed, and ISO is how sensitive the sensor is to light. Change one and you adjust another to keep the brightness the same; but each also changes the look of the photo — blur, motion and grain — and that is what makes the trade worth understanding. Get this one idea and the whole camera stops feeling like guesswork. Here's each control in plain English, the side effect it carries, and a simple recipe to start from.

First, what "exposure" means

Exposureis just how bright or dark the final photo is. Too dark and it's underexposed; too bright and it's overexposed, with washed-out highlights you can't recover. The three controls each let more or less light reach the sensor, so together they decide the exposure. The clever part is that they overlap: there are many combinations of the three that produce the same brightness, and the combination you pick decides how the photo looks.

The common language: "stops"

Before the three dials make sense, you need one word: a stop. A stop is a doubling or halving of light. Open the aperture one stop and you double the light; use a shutter speed one stop slower and you double the light; raise ISO one stop and you double the sensitivity. Because all three are measured in the same stops, they trade cleanly: if you let in one stop more light with the aperture, you can take one stop away with the shutter and the brightness stays put. That shared currency is the whole reason the three form a "triangle."

Aperture — the opening in the lens

Aperture is the adjustable opening inside the lens, written as an f-number like f/1.8 or f/8. The counterintuitive part: a smaller number means a wider opening and more light. f/1.8 is a big opening that floods the sensor; f/8 is a small one that lets in far less. Each full step — f/2 to f/2.8 to f/4 to f/5.6 — halves the light.

Its side effect is depth of field — how much of the scene is in focus from front to back. A wide aperture (f/1.8) gives a shallow depth of field, so your subject is sharp and the background melts into soft blur. A narrow aperture (f/8-f/11) keeps far more in focus, which is what you want for a landscape. So aperture is your creative dial: it sets both the brightness and the blur. A bright 50mm f/1.8 prime is the cheapest way to explore what a wide aperture can do.

Shutter speed — how long the sensor is exposed

Shutter speed is the length of time the sensor is exposed to light, written in fractions of a second: 1/1000s is very fast, 1/30s is fairly slow. A faster shutter lets in less light but each halving is one stop, same as aperture.

Its side effect is motion. A fast shutter (1/1000s) freezes a running dog or a splash mid-air. A slow shutter (1/30s or slower) lets moving things streak — great for a silky waterfall, bad for a sharp portrait if your hands wobble. A useful safety rule for handholding: keep the shutter at least as fast as one over your focal length — about 1/60s with a 50mm lens — or camera shake softens the whole frame. Below that, brace the camera or use a tripod.

ISO — the sensor's sensitivity

ISO is how sensitive the sensor is to light. Low ISO (100, called base ISO) gives the cleanest files; raising it brightens a dark scene — and each doubling, 100 to 200 to 400, is one stop.

Its side effect is noise — the visible grain and speckle that creeps in as ISO climbs. Modern cameras handle surprisingly high ISO cleanly, but there is always a point where detail turns mushy. So ISO is the setting you raise last: only when a good aperture and a safe shutter still leave the photo too dark do you turn it up, and only as far as the light forces you to.

How they trade off in practice

Say you're shooting a portrait and the exposure looks right, but you want more background blur. You open the aperture from f/4 to f/2 — that's two stops more light, so the photo is now too bright. To rebalance, you speed the shutter up two stops (say 1/125s to 1/500s) or drop ISO two stops, and the brightness returns while the blur you wanted stays. That is the triangle in action: you chose the look you cared about (blur), then paid for it with an equal-and-opposite change somewhere else.

The same logic runs the other way. Freezing a fast subject needs a quick shutter, which costs light, so you pay it back by opening the aperture or raising ISO. There is almost always a trade — the skill is knowing which side effect you're willing to accept for the shot in front of you.

A simple starting-point recipe

You don't have to solve the triangle from scratch every time. Start from these, then adjust:

  • Daylight portrait: Aperture priority, f/2-f/2.8, ISO 100, let the camera pick the shutter. Blurred background, easy exposure.
  • Landscape: f/8, ISO 100, and if the shutter drops below the handheld safety speed, use a tripod. Sharp front to back.
  • Action or kids and pets: Shutter priority at 1/1000s with Auto ISO, so motion freezes and the camera fills in the rest.
  • Indoors or low light: widest aperture (f/1.8), shutter no slower than about 1/60-1/125s, and raise ISO to fill the gap. Accept a little grain to keep the shot sharp.

Which control should you prioritize?

The order that works for almost every scene is the same. First pick the aperture for the look you want— blur or sharpness — because that's the creative choice. Then set a shutter speed safe for your subject: fast enough to stop the motion in front of you and to beat your own hand shake. Then raise ISO only as much as the light forces, keeping it low for clean files. Aperture leads because it shapes the image; ISO trails because it's a cost, not a creative tool. Master that sequence and any scene has an obvious starting point.

Let the camera carry two-thirds of it

You do not need full manual mode to use the triangle well. In Aperture priority (marked A or Av) you choose the aperture and the camera sets a matching shutter speed; turn on Auto ISOand it handles the last dial too, keeping it as low as it can. That leaves you controlling the one thing that matters most creatively — the aperture — while the camera does the balancing math. It's the smartest way to learn, because you see the triangle at work without juggling all three at once.
