JPEG vs RAW: Which Should You Shoot?

One file is a finished photo ready to share; the other is the raw ingredients you can cook however you like later. Here's when to choose each — and why RAW+JPEG is often smartest.

A RAW file is the complete, unprocessed data straight off the sensor; a JPEG is a smaller, finished photo the camera has already processed and compressed for you. RAW gives you far more room to fix exposure and color in editing and holds more detail in bright skies and dark shadows; JPEG is small, instantly shareable and needs no editing. What a JPEG is

A JPEGis a finished photo. When you shoot JPEG, the camera takes the sensor data and immediately processes it for you — applying white balance, contrast, color and sharpening according to its picture settings — then compresses the result into a small, universally readable file, discarding the data it judges you won't need. The upside is huge convenience: JPEGs are small, they open on any device, and they look finished straight out of the camera. The downside is that all those decisions are baked in— the camera threw away the extra information, so there's far less to work with if you want to change something later.

What a RAW file is

A RAWfile is the digital negative: all the data the sensor captured, with minimal processing. Where a JPEG records 8 bits of color information per channel, RAW keeps 12 or 14 bits — dramatically more tonal steps — so it holds far more detail, especially in the brightest and darkest parts of the frame. Nothing is baked in: white balance, contrast and color are all still adjustable. The trade is that a RAW file isn't a finished photo. It looks flat until you process it, and it needs software (your camera maker's free converter, or an editor) to turn it into a shareable image.

Dynamic range and editing latitude: where RAW wins

Dynamic range is the span between the darkest and brightest detail a file can hold. Because RAW keeps so much more data, it holds far more dynamic range — which turns into real, visible rescue power. Overexposed a bright sky? A RAW file can often pull the highlights back to reveal clouds a JPEG would have thrown away as pure white. Shot a face too dark against a window? RAW lets you lift the shadows cleanly, where the same edit on a JPEG quickly turns muddy and blotchy.

Just as important is white balance. In RAW it's fully changeable after the fact with zero quality loss, so a photo shot too orange under indoor bulbs is a one-slider fix. In a JPEG the white balance is baked in, and correcting a bad one degrades the image. This editing latitude is the whole reason to shoot RAW: it forgives the exposure and color mistakes every beginner makes while learning the exposure triangle.

The cost: file size and workflow

RAW's power isn't free. RAW files are much larger than JPEGs — commonly several times the size — so they fill memory cards faster, demand more storage and backup space on your computer, and can slow a camera's burst shooting because the buffer fills sooner. And they add a step: every RAW must be processed and exported before you can post or print it. For someone who just wants to share a photo to their phone in seconds, that friction is real. When JPEG is the right call

RAW isn't automatically better for every situation. JPEG is the smart choice when:

  • You need speed. Sharing to social right after the shot, or delivering hundreds of photos fast, is far easier with finished JPEGs.
  • You're shooting long bursts.JPEGs are small, so the camera's buffer lasts longer for sport and action before it slows down.
  • Storage is tight.If your card or laptop is nearly full, JPEG's small files stretch your space much further.

The beginner's answer: shoot RAW+JPEG

Nearly every camera can record both at once, and for a beginner that's the sweet spot. The storage cost nobody warns you about

The one practical thing to plan for with RAW is space. Because RAW files are several times larger than JPEGs, they fill a memory card quickly and pile up fast on your computer, so two small habits pay off. First, use a fast, generously sized memory card — a slow card can bottleneck RAW burst shooting, and a small one fills mid-shoot. Second, have a simple backup routine, because RAW libraries grow quickly and the photos you most want to keep are the ones you least want to lose. Neither is expensive, and both save real frustration. If storage is genuinely tight and you won't edit, that's a fair reason to shoot JPEG-only rather than fight your card all day.

Shoot RAW+JPEG while you learn

The honest default for a beginner is to turn on RAW+JPEG and stop thinking about it. You shoot normally, the JPEG is ready to share the moment you're done, and every RAW is sitting there if a photo turns out special or an exposure needs saving.
