The Best Camera Settings for Video: A Beginner's Guide

A handful of settings separate footage that looks like video from footage that looks like film. Here are the beginner-safe defaults, and why each one is set the way it is.

For beginner video, start here: shoot 24 or 30 frames per second, set your shutter speed to about double the frame rate (1/50s at 24fps, 1/60s at 30fps) for natural-looking motion, and use an ND filter outdoors so you can keep that shutter speed in bright light. Set white balance manually, turn on continuous eye-tracking autofocus, and record at the highest bitrate your memory card can handle. Leave log profiles until you're comfortable — a standard profile looks great with far less work. Each of those has a reason behind it. Here's the why, one setting at a time, so you can adjust with confidence instead of copying numbers blindly.

Frame rate: how many pictures per second

Frame rate is how many still images your camera records each second to build the illusion of motion, written in fps (frames per second). Three numbers cover almost everything a beginner needs:

  • 24fps is the cinematic standard — the frame rate movies use. It has a subtle, filmic motion feel and is the default choice for narrative, vlogs and most YouTube-style content.
  • 30fps is the broadcast and social standard — a touch smoother and crisp for talking-head, tutorial and news-style video. Many creators pick it for online content.
  • 60fps records twice as many frames, so you can slow it down to smooth slow motion in editing, or keep it at full speed for very smooth action. Use it for sport, b-roll and slow-mo moments.

Pick one frame rate for a project and stick to it (apart from clips you specifically intend to slow down), so everything cuts together cleanly.

The 180-degree shutter rule

This is the single setting that most makes video look "right," and it's simple: set your shutter speed to about double your frame rate. The name comes from old film cameras, which used a rotating shutter with a 180-degree opening — the combination that produces natural-looking motion blur. In digital terms it means:

  • 24fps → 1/50s (the nearest available setting to 1/48)
  • 30fps → 1/60s
  • 60fps → 1/120s (or 1/125s)

Why it matters: too fast a shutter (say 1/1000s while filming) freezes each frame, so motion looks stuttery and video-gamey; too slow a shutter smears everything. Matching the shutter to roughly double the frame rate gives each frame a small, natural amount of blur — the look your eye reads as "cinematic" rather than "home video." Unlike stills, in video you generally do not change shutter speed to control exposure; you keep it locked to the frame rate and control brightness other ways.

Why you then need an ND filter in daylight

Here's the problem the shutter rule creates. If your shutter is locked at 1/50s and you want a nice open aperture like f/2.8 for a soft background, in bright daylight that combination lets in far too much light — the footage blows out to white. On stills you'd just speed up the shutter, but in video you can't without ruining the motion look, and closing the aperture down to f/16 costs you the blur and can soften the image.

The fix is a neutral density (ND) filter— effectively sunglasses for your lens. It's a dark piece of glass that screws onto the front and cuts the amount of light entering, without changing color, so you can keep your cinematic shutter and your chosen aperture in bright sun. White balance: lock it so color doesn't drift

White balancetells the camera what "white" looks like under the light you're in, so colors come out true rather than orange under household bulbs or blue in shade. For stills, Auto white balance is fine. For video, set it manually — pick a preset (daylight, shade, tungsten) or a specific Kelvin value for the scene. Auto white balance can drift subtly mid-clip as you pan or as clouds move, and those color shifts are ugly and hard to fix. A fixed white balance keeps every clip consistent.

Picture profiles and log: skip it at first

A picture profileis the camera's recipe for contrast, color and sharpness. The standard or natural profile bakes a pleasing, finished look straight into the file — perfect for beginners, because it looks good with no editing. Turning contrast and sharpness down a notch gives you a little grading room without complication.

Log profiles (S-Log, C-Log, N-Log and similar) record a deliberately flat, low-contrast image to preserve the maximum dynamic range — detail in both bright skies and dark shadows. The trade is that log footage looks washed-out straight off the camera and mustbe color-graded in editing to look right, and it needs more care with exposure and can show more noise if underexposed. It's powerful but it's a workflow, not a shortcut. Start on a standard profile and graduate to log only once you're comfortable editing.

Autofocus: smooth and sticky, not snappy

Turn on continuous autofocus (AF-C) with face and eye detection so the camera holds focus on you or your subject as you move — the feature that keeps modern mirrorless video reliably sharp. Then, if your camera allows, slow the AF transition speed and tracking sensitivity down a step or two. That makes focus glide gently between subjects instead of snapping abruptly, which reads as professional rather than jarring.

Resolution, bitrate and codec

Shoot 4Kif your camera offers it: it's sharp, it downscales to crisp 1080p, and it gives you room to crop or reframe in editing. Bitrate is how much data the camera records per second — higher bitrate holds more detail and gives you more editing headroom, at the cost of bigger files, so choose the highest your card can sustain. The codec is how that video is compressed: H.264 is the universally compatible starting point, while H.265 (HEVC) packs more quality into smaller files but asks more of your computer to edit. Whatever you pick, use a fast, high-capacity memory card — slow cards stutter and stop 4K recording mid-take.

Don't forget sound and stability

The daylight problem, restated

If you remember one thing, make it this: in video you lock the shutter to the frame rate for natural motion, which means you can't use shutter speed to tame bright light the way you do in stills.
